The Rule He Lives By

Jason Nacey was born in Deadwood, South Dakota and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. Growing up with limited resources but abundant creativity, he developed a belief that became the foundation of everything he does: your circumstances don't determine your outcome — your mindset does.

"Nobody else is coming to solve your problems" became more than a mantra. It became a way of life that carried him from Deadwood to Ironman finish lines, Spartan World Championships, and eventually to the pages of this book.

The Ironman Nobody Believed In

When someone told Jason he couldn't finish an Ironman triathlon, he didn't argue. He signed up that day. At the time, he could barely swim a length of the pool.

What followed was a masterclass in identity-based training — not building fitness, but building the belief system of someone who finishes. He crossed the finish line. Then he did it again. And again.

The Book That Kept Calling

For years, Jason resisted writing Above the Shoulders. He told himself he wasn't a writer. That he had no credentials. That nobody would listen.

Then he realized he was breaking his own rule. Tackling hard challenges is who he is. The book became his own test case in mindset and narrative control. Today it carries a foreword by Joe De Sena, founder of Spartan Race, and endorsements from Olympic medalists and NYT bestselling authors. Kirkus Reviews named it one of the Top 100 Indie Books of 2025.
